Drawn from the Headlines...of the 1890s: Adventures in Comics and Digital Newspaper Archives

Wednesday, March 27, 5:30 pm
Marsh Room, Billings Library
University of Vermont

On March 27 at 5:30 pm, our Stories from the Stacks series will continue with cultural anthropologist Luis Vivanco's presentation, "Drawn from the Headlines...of the 1890s: Adventures in Comics and Digital Newspaper Archives."  Vivanco has been conducting long-term ethnographic and historical research on bicycling, and recently he discovered comics as a great way to communicate about that research. In this talk, he will describe how he’s been using digital newspaper archives to create comics about bicycling and social change in late nineteenth-century Vermont.

Vivanco has been a professor in the Department of Anthropology at UVM since 1997. His research includes investigations on the rise of sustainable transportation movements and alternatives to automobility in urban areas, focusing on the relationship between bicycle transportation, environmental sustainability, and quality of life. His many publications include Reconsidering the Bicycle: An Anthropological Perspective on a New (Old) Thing, and he has taught courses on "Anthropology of Mobility" and "Bicycles, Globalization and Sustainability." Check out his blog, bicycles, illustrated, where he shares "a cultural anthropologist/amateur comics-producer’s fascination with bicycles in history and across cultures."

The talk is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Silver Special Collections at uvmsc@uvm.edu or (802) 656-2138.
